A center support bearing — also called a carrier bearing, midship bearing, or hanger bearing — is the rubber-isolated ball bearing assembly that supports the center of a two-piece driveshaft. On trucks, SUVs, and commercial vehicles with long wheelbase drivelines, splitting the shaft into two sections with a carrier bearing in the middle allows the critical speed (the RPM at which a spinning shaft begins to resonate) to be kept above the operating range. Without this support, a long single-piece shaft would whip and vibrate at highway speeds.
When a center support bearing fails, symptoms include:
Vibration or shudder at specific road speeds (typically 45-70 mph)
Grinding or rumbling noise that increases with vehicle speed
Visible rubber cracking or collapse in the bearing bracket assembly
Grease leaking from the bearing housing
Universal Driveshafts carries center support bearings for domestic and import applications including:
Ford F-150, F-250, F-350, Expedition, Econoline, Ranger
Chevrolet / GMC Silverado, Sierra, Suburban, Tahoe, Colorado, Canyon
Dodge / Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, Dakota
Mercedes-Benz S-Class, E-Class, Sprinter, G-Class (2880-series)
Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, Land Cruiser, 4Runner
Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Commander
Commercial and industrial applications across all common bracket widths
When ordering a center support bearing, you need: bore ID (the shaft diameter it rides on), overall bracket width, and the outer race diameter or bracket bolt pattern. Our product listings include all critical dimensions — confirm these against your existing bearing before ordering.
Not sure which bearing you need? Use our Center Support Bearing Size Chart & Cross-Reference to match your bearing by inner diameter, height, and mount hole spacing.
