Tube outside diameter alone does not size a shaft. The wall thickness sets the bore, and the bore has to match the butt diameter of the weld yoke going into it.
Driveshaft tube carries torque in torsion and has to resist buckling at speed. Steel tube gives the highest torsional strength for a given diameter and welds directly to steel yokes without special procedure, which is why it remains the standard for truck and heavy driveline work.
Longer shafts need larger diameter tube to keep the critical speed above the operating range, not thicker wall. If you are replacing a shaft, match the original outside diameter and wall unless you are deliberately changing the design.
