Category Information

A universal joint — U-joint or cross — is the mechanical link that transfers rotational torque between two driveshaft sections that operate at an angle to each other. Every time the suspension moves, the engine torques up, or the transfer case shifts angle, the U-joint is the component absorbing that geometric change while keeping the driveline spinning. A joint that is too small for the application, poorly lubricated, or manufactured with inconsistent bearing cup dimensions will wear rapidly, generate vibration, and ultimately fail — often taking yokes and slip splines with it.

Universal Driveshafts stocks U-joints across the full Spicer series hierarchy:

1210 Series — 1.062" cap, light passenger vehicles and small equipment
1310 Series — 1.062" cap, the most common light truck and SUV cross
1330 Series — 1.062" cap, slightly wider body than 1310, higher torque rating
1350 Series — 1.188" cap, heavy-duty trucks and towing applications
1410 Series — 1.188" cap, Class 5-6 commercial and performance builds
1480 Series — 1.375" cap, Class 6-7 commercial trucks
1550 Series — 1.375" cap, heavy commercial and industrial
1610 Series — 1.875" cap, heavy industrial drivelines
1710 Series — 1.938" cap, Class 7-8 truck applications
SPL55 through SPL170 — large industrial, mining, and heavy extraction

We carry both greaseable crosses (Zerk fitting at the center journal) and permanently sealed crosses for applications where re-greasing is not practical. Snap ring styles vary by series — Inner Snap Ring (ISR) and Outer Snap Ring (OSR) — and must match your yoke bore machining. Combo / crossover crosses are available where one axis is a different series than the other, used when bridging two different yoke families in the same driveline.

Every U-joint we ship is manufactured to tight tolerances on bearing cup outside diameter and snap ring groove width. Loose tolerances in these dimensions are the primary source of vibration after a cross replacement — the cup spins in the bore rather than being locked by the snap ring, and the resulting play translates directly to driveline shudder at speed.
