Wing bearing u-joints retain the bearing caps with integral wings that bolt straight to the yoke, so there are no snap rings to shear. That is why they dominate heavy-duty truck, off-highway and industrial driveline work.

Wing bearing and bearing plate joints are not interchangeable with snap-ring joints even at the same cross dimensions, because the yoke has to be machined for the bolted retention. Check what your yoke accepts before ordering.

A wing bearing joint carries its retention in the bearing cap itself. Each cap has two cast wings that sit against a machined pad on the yoke and take a pair of bolts, usually with a lock strap or thread locker. Clamping load comes from the fasteners rather than from a groove and ring, which is what lets the design survive the shock loading of a loaded truck driveline.

Because the retention is bolted, the joint can be serviced without pressing rings in and out, and the caps stay square to the trunnion under torque reversal. The trade-off is that the yoke must be machined for wings, so a wing bearing cross cannot be dropped into a snap-ring yoke of the same nominal size.
