Inside snap ring joints carry their rings inboard of the yoke ear, between the bearing cap and the cross. The rings are hidden from outside, which is the quickest way to tell the style apart on a shaft you already have.

If you cannot see rings on the outer faces of the ears, you are almost certainly looking at an inside snap ring joint. Confirm cap diameter and width before ordering.
Inside snap ring construction puts the groove on the inboard side of the yoke ear. The ring goes in behind the bearing cap, so from outside the yoke you see only the cap face. The arrangement keeps the retention out of the way of driveshaft tube clearance, which is why it appears on many factory shafts where packaging is tight.
Servicing takes slightly more work than an outside ring because the rings have to be reached from inside the yoke, but the joint is otherwise equivalent in load capacity to an outside ring joint of the same series.
