Q: Can I substitute a standard Ford 28-spline yoke for the 3103-282 on my Explorer?
A: No. The 5R55E and 5R45 transmissions used in the Explorer and Sport-Trac have a different pressure angle on their output shaft splines compared to the older C4/AOD pattern. The spline count (28) and PD (1.220") are the same on paper, but the involute tooth form is different enough that a mismatched yoke will rock on the shaft under load and destroy both the yoke and the output shaft splines within a short service interval.
Q: What makes the 3103-282 different from the 3103-281?
A: The 3103-282 is 0.812" longer center-to-end (8.187" vs 7.375"). Ford used different tailshaft lengths in the Explorer across model years and body configurations. Measure your existing yoke CL-to-end -- if it is close to 8.187", order the 282; if it measures closer to 7.375", use the 281. Installing the wrong length will shift the driveshaft tube engagement zone and can cause vibration or, at worst, contact between the tube and the tunnel at suspension compression.
Q: What U-joint does this yoke use?
A: The 1310 series uses a 1.062" cap diameter U-joint. Cross-reference Spicer 5-153X for the rear joint, or GKN equivalent. Grease the joint at installation and at every 30,000-mile service interval.
