- The 1997 model year NP231 changed to an external-spline output shaft -- earlier Wranglers (pre-1997) use an internal spline; they are not interchangeable
- Boot seal is required to protect the external spline from trail debris and water intrusion -- do not install without it
- 5.750" C-to-end is correct for stock rear driveshaft geometry on TJ-generation Wranglers
- Works with both single-cardan and double-cardan (CV) rear driveshafts at stock suspension height
- For a transmission yoke upgrade with extended boot and CV capability, cross-reference the 3103-273CV variant if a lift kit of 3"+ is planned
Boot clamps should be torqued to manufacturer spec -- an over-tightened clamp on the plastic boot collar of the external-spline NP231 housing will crack the collar and allow sand ingestion, which will score the output shaft splines and destroy the yoke within one season of moderate off-road use.
