The Ford E4OD 4-speed overdrive automatic (1989-1997) and its successor 4R100 (1998-2003) are found in F-Series, E-Series, and Excursion vehicles with V8 and diesel powertrains. The 1.435" counterbore on 3503-310 pilots against the E4OD/4R100 output bearing retainer OD, providing centering that is required for smooth operation at highway cruise speed.
The 8.250" C/U-joint to end provides the slip travel needed for full-size Ford trucks and vans with long driveshafts. Compare 3503-310 (8.250") with 3503-313 (7.500", same counterbore) when selecting for shorter-wheelbase Ford applications. The 1.685" hub OD is the E4OD/4R100 output seal specification. When the driveshaft is removed for service, always replace the output seal before reinstallation -- E4OD and 4R100 output seals have a history of fluid leakage when the yoke is reinstalled without a new seal.
