Diagnosing Slip Yoke Failure
A healthy slip yoke moves smoothly on the output shaft with minimal radial play and no perceptible spline backlash. When the splines wear, the yoke develops side-to-side movement that creates the characteristic low-frequency thud heard during tip-in acceleration. Simultaneously, the scored sliding surface begins to damage the transmission seal, eventually producing a fluid trail on the driveshaft. Replacing the 3103-162 at the first sign of spline wear prevents cascading damage to the seal and output shaft.
