2-28-577 -- 1310-Series Weld Yoke Verification Warning
One of the most frequent field errors with 1310/1330 series yokes: both use the same 1.062" cap diameter, but the 1330-series cross has a wider trunnion span (wider distance between the two yoke ears) than the 1310 cross. A 1310 yoke welded to a shaft and mated with a 1330 cross will show excessive lateral play at the caps -- the cross will rock in the bore and fail prematurely. Verify series by measuring the distance between the inner faces of the yoke ears (the "snap ring groove to snap ring groove" dimension), not just the cap bore.
The 2-28-577 is a 1310-series weld yoke for 2.000" x 0.095" steel tube with a butt diameter of 1.812" and 1.688" center-to-weld. Spicer OEM equivalent: 2-28-577 (same part number used in Spicer cataloging). Neapco catalog reference: 2-0020 series. Common on light-duty passenger-car and compact truck rear driveshafts.
Weld procedure: ER70S-6 filler, 75/25 Ar/CO2 shielding, single-pass fillet at the butt joint. Inspect alignment before final weld -- maximum allowable runout before welding is 0.005" TIR at the U-joint bore centerline.
