The 10-3-18KX is a 1000 series slip yoke providing 16 splines at 1.250" inch diameter, with a centerline-to-end dimension of 5.500 inches. Slip yokes allow the effective length of the driveshaft to change as the suspension cycles, preventing bind or tension that would stress the transmission tailshaft and U-joints under articulation.

How Slip Yokes Protect Your Drivetrain
Without a slip yoke, driveshaft length would be fixed. As the axle moves through its suspension travel -- or as the transmission shifts slightly in its mounts -- the driveshaft would experience a bending moment that would either crack the shaft or pull the U-joint out of its bearing cups. The slip yoke solves this by allowing the transmission output end of the shaft to slide in and out of the tailshaft extension while remaining torque-coupled through the spline engagement.
The 16-spline, 1.250"-inch spline of the 10-3-18KX provides the correct engagement area for the 1000 series torque rating. Spline wear -- visible as bright metal polish at the root diameter -- reduces the effective engagement and can allow harmonic oscillation in the slip joint under load.
Installation and Service Guidelines
- Clean the transmission tailshaft spline and apply a coat of spline lubricant before inserting the slip yoke
- Confirm the transmission extension housing seal is in good condition -- a worn seal will allow ATF to contaminate the spline and migrate into the driveshaft tube
- Verify the centerline-to-end dimension (5.500) provides adequate engagement travel for your suspension lift or lowering modification
- Check for radial play in the spline engagement -- more than 0.010 inch of backlash indicates the yoke or tailshaft spline is worn and should be replaced
