Bearing Journal & Center Support Selection
The 1.772" bearing journal diameter is the key dimension for selecting a matching center support bearing (CSB). The CSB bore must match this journal within 0.001" for a press or slip fit -- consult your bearing supplier for the appropriate fit class for your application. An undersized bore will damage the journal during installation; an oversized bore will allow the bearing to spin on the shaft.
Spline Interface
This shaft uses a 34 X 1.750 spline configuration with 2.125" engagement. Note: the splines on this shaft have a helical tooth form -- mating yokes will feel tight during assembly, which is normal. Do not force with excessive press load; use a plastic mallet or arbor press with a proper pilot.
Installation as a Midship Section
This is a fixed-style stub shaft (no slip travel -- used where a separate slip yoke is installed upstream). When assembling a two-piece driveshaft:
- Press the center support bearing onto the 1.772" journal -- use a bearing driver that contacts the inner race only.
- Mount the CSB bracket to the vehicle crossmember, checking for rubber isolator clearance.
- Align the forward and rear shaft sections so u-joint operating angles are equal and opposing.
- Torque the CSB bracket fasteners to specification and re-check alignment.
Note: Spline has helix on tooth. End yokes will be a tight fit.
