The 1442-241 stub midship shaft bridges the gap between transmission output and rear driveshaft section in two-piece driveshaft assemblies. Featuring 24 X 1.020 splines, a 1.812" butt diameter, and a 2.000" x 0.095" wall tube, it is precision-welded to maintain driveline balance within tight tolerances.

Two-Piece Driveshaft Architecture

Long-wheelbase trucks and SUVs use a two-piece driveshaft to avoid resonance frequencies that would be unavoidable with a single long tube. The front section -- the stub midship -- rides on a center support bearing and connects to the front of the rear driveshaft section. The 1442-241 fills this role, providing a dimensionally stable, balanced midship tube ready for installation with a matching center support bearing.

Balance and Runout Standards

Midship shafts are finish-balanced after assembly. Runout should be verified at installation: use a dial indicator at the center of the tube with the shaft supported on its U-joints. Maximum allowable TIR is 0.010" for passenger and light truck applications. Any damage to the tube that causes runout exceeding this limit requires replacement.

Installation Guidance

  • Install center support bearing before raising shaft into position
  • Align spline pilot into transmission or transfer case output bore
  • Mate rear U-joint cross into the rear yoke with snap rings fully seated
  • Torque center support bearing bracket fasteners to specification
  • Check driveshaft angle: improper center bearing height causes vibration
