A slip yoke is the splined, telescoping end of a driveshaft that slides into the transmission or transfer case output shaft. It allows the driveshaft to change length as the suspension moves — as the rear axle drops and rises in its travel, the distance between the transmission output and the axle flange changes slightly, and the slip yoke absorbs that change through axial movement on the splined shaft. Without this slip function, the driveshaft would bind or push the transmission rearward as the suspension compressed.
Slip yoke selection requires matching:
Spline count and diameter — must match the transmission or transfer case output shaft precisely (common specs: 16-spline 1.125", 27-spline 1.375", 32-spline 1.500")
U-joint series — determines the bearing cup bore in the yoke ears (1310, 1330, 1350, etc.)
Slip length — the splined engagement length; longer slip provides more suspension travel clearance
Snap ring style — OSR or ISR, must match the opposite U-joint end
Universal Driveshafts stocks slip yokes for manual and automatic transmissions, transfer cases, and two-piece driveshaft center section applications. We carry standard OEM-replacement units as well as extended-slip versions for lifted vehicles and applications with increased suspension travel.
