The 170-28-17 accommodates a 4.961" outer diameter tube at 0.118" wall thickness -- a thin-wall large-diameter specification that achieves a favorable weight-to-stiffness ratio for long-span commercial driveshafts. The 4.750" butt diameter steps down from the 4.961" OD, creating an inside shoulder inside the tube bore that the weld yoke seats against for concentricity during the tacking process. The 3.700" centerline-to-weld is more compact than the 170-28-27 variant, positioning the weld closer to the U-joint and reducing the overall assembly length -- an advantage when package clearance is tight.

Important welding note: the 0.118" wall is significantly thinner than the 0.197" wall on the 170-28-27. Reduce heat input and increase travel speed accordingly to avoid burn-through or excessive distortion at the weld toe. Post-weld balance is mandatory on all heavy-commercial weld yoke assemblies at this tube size; a static imbalance of even 0.5 oz-inch at these diameters produces significant vibration at 1,800 RPM driveshaft speed.
