The 4-28-307 and 4-28-417 are dimensional twins at the tube interface (3.500"x0.095", 3.321" butt diameter) but differ by 0.500" in centerline-to-weld: 2.188" versus 2.688". This dimension difference changes the effective assembled shaft length when replacing one with the other. Always measure the CL-to-weld of the original yoke before ordering a replacement -- a 0.500" error in shaft length at the transmission end translates directly to a 0.500" error in driveshaft geometry, which shifts the rear U-joint operating angle at ride height.

The shorter CL-to-weld on the 4-28-307 indicates a different yoke body design with the weld shoulder positioned closer to the U-joint end. This reduces the heat-affected zone distance slightly compared to the 4-28-417, but 2.188" still provides adequate clearance from the joint journals for a properly managed weld. The 1550-series U-joint is required at the ear bore. Pair with a 1550-series end yoke at the pinion to complete the series-matched assembly. This weld yoke is appropriate for all standard production 1550-series applications at this tube specification.
