Full Description
The 5C-3XU is a conversion (combination) U-joint bridging the 1480 series (1.375" cap) and the 5C heavy-duty series (1.688" cap). This combination is used when one end of the driveshaft mounts to a 1480-series yoke and the other end connects to equipment or a differential housing that uses a 5C-series yoke bore. Using a standard 1480 joint in a 5C bore leaves the caps 0.313" undersize -- an unacceptable fit that will destroy the bearing immediately under load.
- Cap diameter 1 (1480 end): 1.375"
- Cap diameter 2 (5C end): 1.688"
- Lube: greaseable (zerk fitting) -- regrease at each scheduled service interval
- Type: MECH (mechanical conversion), also referenced as 5C x 1480 in Spicer/Dana catalogs
- Verify which axis receives which cap diameter before pressing -- the wider 1.688" caps must seat in the 5C ear bores
Heavy-duty conversion joints like the 5C-3XU allow driveshaft upgrades without replacing both yokes simultaneously -- but the limiting torque of the assembly is always set by the weaker of the two series (in this case, 1480). If maximum 5C torque capacity is required throughout, both yokes should be upgraded to 5C series.
