5-788XU -- Sealed 1310 x 7260 Combo U-Joint
The 5-788XU is a sealed combo universal joint that bridges the 1310 and 7260 series in a single cross body. The 1310 side uses a 1.078-inch cap diameter with OSR (Outer Snap Ring) retention; the 7260 side uses a 1.063-inch cap with ISR (Inner Snap Ring) retention. This combination is factory-original in GM full-size trucks and SUVs built with a 1310-series transmission output yoke and a 7260-style rear driveshaft flange.
This joint is sealed -- no Zerk grease fitting is present. The factory-sealed needle bearings are pre-lubricated with a long-life grease and protected by a triple-lip seal on each bearing cup. When the seals fail or the joint reaches end of life, replacement (not re-greasing) is the correct service action. Attempting to drill and tap a grease fitting into a sealed cross body destroys the cap geometry.
OSR vs. ISR Retention -- Why It Matters
The snap ring style difference between the two sides is not cosmetic. OSR (Outer Snap Ring) fits in a groove on the outer face of the yoke bore; ISR (Inner Snap Ring) sits inside the bore wall. If you are pressing this joint into a yoke designed for the wrong snap ring style, the cap will either seat incorrectly or fall out under load. Verify both bores before pressing.
