At 3.750" center-to-base, the 2780-17 is among the tallest carriers in the BMW 2780 series. This height places the bearing housing well above the tunnel floor in certain longwheelbase BMW sedans and wagons. The engineering trade-off is clear: a tall carrier keeps the rear propshaft section running at a lower angle relative to horizontal, reducing U-joint wear -- but it also means the isolator rubber is under greater static load and fatigues faster on rough roads. Inspect the rubber housing on your center support bearing at each service interval.
