Replacing the boot at the first sign of damage is always more cost-effective than replacing the entire CV joint assembly.

Why Boot Condition Matters

The CV joint boot seals the bearing and grease pack inside the joint. A torn boot allows the grease to fling out during operation while road grit and moisture are drawn in. Driving as little as a few hundred miles on a torn boot can destroy a CV joint that would otherwise last the life of the vehicle. Installation Overview

Boot replacement requires disassembly of the outer CV joint from the axle shaft. After removing the old boot, clean the joint thoroughly, inspect the balls and races for pitting or corrosion, and pack with fresh CV grease before installing the new boot. Seat both clamps firmly -- the inner clamp at the joint housing and the outer clamp at the shaft. Uneven clamping allows the boot to walk off the joint under articulation.
