2716-311 Dust Caps Press On – BMW apps, used with 3133-311, 0.20″ width

The 2716-311U is a UDS press-on dust cap designed for BMW applications -- Newer BMW apps, used with 3133-311, 0.20" width. Dust caps protect the splined bore of driveshaft components from contamination, corrosion, and mechanical damage during service and storage. With a 1.500" outer diameter and 1.43-31 spline size, this cap presses firmly onto the hub without adhesive and seats flush with the end face.

Design and Function

A press-on dust cap performs a simple but critical function: it keeps debris, moisture, and oil out of the spline bore. Without a cap, corrosion inside the spline can lock the yoke to the output shaft, requiring destructive removal. The 2716-311U seats securely through a press fit and can be removed with a slide hammer or cap puller during future service without damaging the underlying splines.

Installation and Usage

Press the cap squarely onto the hub using a flat-faced driver or socket of appropriate diameter. Do not tilt the cap during installation -- an uneven press fit allows moisture ingress at the partial-contact edge. The cap should seat flush with or slightly below the end face of the hub. Verify that the cap is fully seated by pressing around the perimeter after initial installation.

Replace this cap whenever the driveshaft is disassembled for service. Reusing a deformed or partially corroded cap defeats its purpose. The 2716-311U is sold individually -- order multiples for fleet maintenance or rebuild kits.
