The spl170-4x is a SPL170-4X series SPRTAB retention universal joint measuring 2.165" cap dia | 6.456" width. The spl170-4x is greaseable with zerk fitting. Every spl170-4x is verified for cap diameter, bearing width, and snap ring groove dimensions before it ships from Universal Driveshafts.
This u-joint -- It Series Cap & Width Specifications
The the part specs: 2.165" cap dia | 6.456" width. Cap diameter determines which yoke bore it fits -- the cap must seat fully into the yoke without play. Bearing width (6.456" across the body) controls the span between yoke ears. A cross that is too wide won't fit; too narrow and the snap rings don't seat in the groove. SPL170.
Verify the yoke bore diameter against the this component cap size before installing. The snap ring style (SPRTAB retention) must match the yoke groove pattern -- OSR yokes have an external groove; ISR yokes have an internal groove. The this u-joint requires a grease gun at installation and at regular service intervals. Correct installation torque on the strap kit or U-bolt is critical -- undertorqued straps allow the cap to walk under load.
Installation Notes for it
Before installing the this unit, clean the yoke bores of any rust, burrs, or old bearing material. The bearing cups must drop in by hand -- never drive them in with a hammer directly on the cup. Use a proper cross-and-bearing installation tool or a press. Driving a cup in at an angle cocks the needle bearings and destroys the the assembly before it ever sees load.
After installation, verify full rotation without binding. A binding cross indicates a cup is cocked or seated too deep. The this u-joint should articulate freely through the full operating angle of your driveshaft before the vehicle is lowered off the lift.
