Why Bearing Bore Tolerance Matters

The flange yoke bearing bore is the single most important dimension for U-joint longevity. The bore must hold the bearing cap with enough interference to prevent rotation under dynamic load, but not so tight that it distorts the cup and overloads the needles. The 5502-120KV is machined to the 1550 series tolerance specification, providing reliable retention for the full service life of the U-joint assembly.

When inspecting used flange yokes, measure the bearing bore with a snap gauge and compare to the new-part specification. Bores that are more than 0.001 inch oversize should be replaced -- the 5502-120KV is the correct replacement for this application.

Correct Fastener Specification

• Always use new, grade-matched bolts when attaching the driveshaft to the companion flange
• Torque in a cross-pattern to the vehicle manufacturer's specification -- typically 60-85 ft-lbs
• Confirm the 3.950 bolt circle aligns with the mating companion flange before final torque
• Apply thread-locking compound to bolt threads if specified in the OEM service manual
