The GAR03-003 rubber flex disc (also called a guibo or giubo) serves as the flexible coupling between the transmission output flange and the front driveshaft yoke in vehicles that use this connection type instead of a traditional U-joint. Designed for ROLLS ROYCE applications, it features a 80MM bolt circle, 36.5MM disc width, and 6 bolt holes at 10MM diameter.

How the Flex Disc Works

A rubber flex disc transmits engine torque through a vulcanized rubber spider bonded to steel inserts at each bolt location. The rubber element absorbs torsional shock, reduces driveline NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), and provides a small amount of angular flexibility to accommodate minor driveshaft misalignment. Unlike U-joints, the flex disc produces no velocity variation at operating angles -- an advantage for smooth power delivery at low angles.

Rubber Compound and Durability

Flex disc rubber must withstand continuous torsional cycling, oil mist, and temperature extremes from below freezing to the high underbody heat of performance vehicles. The GAR03-003 uses a high-modulus natural rubber compound formulated to resist cracking and delamination from the steel inserts over a full service interval. Signs of wear include visible cracks in the rubber, separation at the insert bond line, or a pulling sensation in the steering during torque application.

Replacement Procedure

• Mark the relative position of the driveshaft and transmission flange before disassembly
• Support the driveshaft to prevent bending at the rear joint during removal
• Remove alternating bolts: three bolts attach to the transmission flange, three to the driveshaft yoke
• Slide the driveshaft rearward to clear the centering pilot if present
• Install GAR03-003 with alternating bolt orientation; torque to OEM specification
• Check alignment: the disc should sit flat with no angular deflection at rest
