DAMPNER WITH FLEX DISC
Category Information

A rubber flex disc — also called a guibo, flex coupling, or Hardyscheibe — is a torsionally flexible coupling that replaces a conventional U-joint at the transmission end of a driveshaft on many European and some domestic vehicles. Rather than transmitting torque through needle bearings at a fixed articulation angle, the flex disc uses a vulcanized rubber disc to absorb minor angular misalignment, reduce driveline shock loads, and dampen high-frequency torsional vibrations that would otherwise transmit into the cabin as NVH.

Flex discs are specified by:

Bolt circle diameter — the diameter on which the mounting bolts are arranged (e.g., 78mm, 96mm, 105mm)
Bolt count — typically 6-bolt configurations
Disc OD and thickness — determines articulation capacity and torque rating
Vehicle application — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi, Cadillac, Volvo, and others

Symptoms of a worn flex disc include driveline clunk on acceleration and deceleration, visible cracking or chunking of the rubber, and driveshaft vibration at low speeds. Unlike a failed U-joint which often seizes suddenly, a flex disc degrades gradually — the rubber fatigues and the bolt bushings wear oval, increasing rotational lash. Universal Driveshafts stocks flex discs for all major European and domestic applications that use this coupling style.
